How to Care for Your Lingerie: Washing and Storage Tips That Extend Its Life
Delicate fabrics like lace, mesh, and satin are what make lingerie feel special — but they also need a gentler touch than the rest of your wardrobe. A little extra care goes a long way in keeping your pieces looking new.
Skip the washing machine when you can
Hand-washing is always the safest option for lace and mesh lingerie. Use cool water and a mild, gentle detergent, swishing the garment softly rather than scrubbing or wringing it. If you must use a machine, place items in a mesh laundry bag on a cold, delicate cycle.
Never tumble dry
Heat is the biggest enemy of elastic and delicate lace fibres — it breaks down elasticity over time, leading to that stretched-out, worn feeling. Always lay lingerie flat to air dry, away from direct sunlight or radiators, and reshape gently while damp.
Storage that protects the shape
Fold rather than hang delicate pieces where possible, keeping underwire bras and structured bodysuits in their natural cup shape rather than flattened. Store away from rougher fabrics or anything with clasps or zips that could snag delicate lace.
Rotate your pieces
Wearing the same piece two days in a row doesn't give elastic fibres time to recover. Rotating between a few favourites — rather than relying on just one or two sets — will noticeably extend the life of each piece.
Treat spills and marks early
Blot, don't rub, any marks as soon as you notice them, and hand-wash as soon as practical rather than letting anything set in.
