How to Wear a Suspender Belt and Stockings: Step-by-Step Guide

A suspender belt and stockings (called a garter belt in the US) is one of the most classic lingerie looks there is. It can look complicated, but once you know the order to put things on, it takes less than five minutes. This guide walks you through it step by step.

The parts, explained

BeltStrapClipWeltClip each strap to the stocking welt, not the sheer leg
The straps clip onto the thick top band of each stocking, called the welt.
  • Suspender belt: sits around your waist or hips and has straps hanging down, usually four or six.
  • Straps and clips: adjustable straps end in clips that hold the stockings up.
  • Stockings: they need a wide, non-silicone top band (the welt) so the clips have something to grip.

How to put it on, step by step

Five steps to wearing stockings

In this order, nothing slips

1Put on the suspender beltFasten it at your natural waist or high on the hips, hooks at the front, then turn it round→ Belt first
2Roll on the stockingsGather each stocking to the toe and roll it up your leg so it sits straight→ Stockings second
3Clip the front strapsFold the welt over the clip button and slide the loop over it to lock→ Front clips
4Clip the back strapsReach behind, or sit on the edge of the bed to make it easier→ Back clips
5Adjust and add knickersWear knickers over the straps so you can take them off without unclipping→ Knickers last

Why knickers go on last

If you wear your knickers over the suspender straps, you can take them off without unclipping everything, which is the trick most first-timers don't know.

Getting the fit right

The belt should sit snugly without digging in; if it rides up, try it a little lower on the hips. Adjust each strap so there's light tension on the stocking: too tight and the clips pull at the welt, too loose and the stockings sag. For straight seams, check in a mirror after clipping the back straps.

Check the measurements on each product page, and see our Size & Fit Guide if you're between sizes.

FAQs

Do knickers go over or under a suspender belt?

Over. Put on the suspender belt and stockings first, then your knickers, so you can take them off without unclipping the straps.

What is the difference between a garter belt and a suspender belt?

They're the same thing. Suspender belt is the UK name and garter belt is the US name.

Can I wear hold-ups with a suspender belt?

You can, but you don't need to. Hold-ups have a silicone band to stay up on their own. Stockings with a plain welt are the right choice for a suspender belt.

How many straps should a suspender belt have?

Most have four, which is plenty. Six-strap belts give extra hold and a more traditional look.
