Satin Chemise Nightdresses: The Complete Guide to Styles, Fit & Care

"Chemise" gets used loosely online, so it's worth being precise: a chemise is a single-layer slip-style nightdress, usually cut on a straight or slightly A-line silhouette, that falls from the bust or shoulders without a separate top and bottom. That's different from a babydoll (which has a fitted underbust seam and a flared skirt built for volume) and different from a full-length nightgown (which is longer and often more structured). A chemise is simpler, closer to the body, and — because it's usually satin rather than lace — it reads as sleepwear or loungewear rather than occasion lingerie. If you want the fuller, more dramatic silhouette, our babydoll guide covers that shape instead.

What to look for in a satin chemise

Satin varies a lot in weight and finish, and it changes how a chemise wears:

Weight. A lighter, silkier satin (like our Silky Satin Chemise Nightdress, from £13.99) drapes close to the body and feels coolest to sleep in — better for warmer nights or under a robe. A slightly heavier satin holds its shape better and is less prone to clinging or riding up, which matters more than people expect if you move around in your sleep.

Neckline and trim. This is mostly personal preference, but it changes how a piece can be worn. A V-neck style, like the Satin Chemise Nightdress with V-Neck (£14.99), sits lower and layers well under an open robe. Lace-trimmed hems and straps, like the Satin Chemise Nightdress with Lace Trim (£19.99, in Navy, Black, Pink or Red), dress the same basic shape up a little without adding another layer.

Whether it comes with a robe. A handful of styles, including our Satin Chemise Nightdress with Robe (£14.99), are sold as a two-piece set. If you're buying for gifting or want something that photographs well for a bridal or honeymoon occasion, the matching robe is worth the small premium over buying the chemise alone.

Getting the fit right

Because a chemise skims rather than shapes, sizing is more forgiving than structured lingerie, but two things are worth checking before you order:

Bust room: most of our chemise styles run S–XXL and are cut with light stretch, but if you're between sizes and want it to sit close rather than loose, size down. If you'd rather it skim without any pull across the bust, size up. Our bra sizing guide has the measuring method if you're not sure which UK size you're starting from — the same underbust and bust measurements translate directly.

Length: chemises typically hit mid-thigh to knee depending on your height and the specific cut, since there's no fitted waist seam to anchor the hem at a consistent point. If length matters to you (for modesty, for layering under a robe, or just personal comfort), check the product photos for how the hem sits relative to the model before choosing a size purely by bust measurement.

Colour and occasion

Our range currently runs from deep, richer tones — Wine Red, Navy, Black, Dark Green — through to lighter Champagne, Silver Grey and Light Purple. As a rough guide: darker satin tends to photograph better for evening or gifting occasions, while Champagne and lighter neutrals wear more like everyday loungewear you'd actually reach for on a Tuesday. If you're buying as a gift and unsure, Black and Wine Red are the two most versatile — they don't read as seasonal and suit most skin tones.

Caring for satin (it's not the same as lace)

Satin and lace need slightly different handling. Where our lace care guide focuses on protecting delicate lacework from snagging, satin's main enemies are heat and friction:

Wash cold, by hand or on a delicates/silk cycle inside a mesh bag — hot water and machine agitation are what dull satin's sheen fastest. Skip the tumble dryer entirely; heat is the single biggest cause of satin losing its lustre and starting to look worn. Hang or lay flat to dry instead. If you iron it, use the lowest setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric, or steam it instead — direct heat on bare satin can leave a shine mark that won't come out.
